As a mental health occupational therapist, our work emphasis is supporting the person to "function" and "engage" in the everyday occupations that they find meaningful.
We work with each person and support them to establish a holistic and wellness goal that is tailored to their individual needs. This includes exploring the individual as well as their physical, social, emotional, work, leisure, cultural and spiritual environments across each aspect of their life.
Fun Fact: Did you know that occupational therapy actually originated from the field of mental health to help people with mental illness to engage in meaningful activities of daily living?
Sensory Intervention
Does a certain smell remind you of an experience or a memory of an ex?
When you feel sad, do you feel comforted when your loved one hugs you?
Do you feel melancholy when listening to Taylor Swift's "All Too Well"?
Well, the idea of sensory intervention is about exploring the emotional connections to each sense (touch, smell, taste, sound, vision, proprioception, vestibular and interoception). Mental health occupational therapists work with you to understand your body's response to thoughts, emotions, trauma, environment, and your relationship. We utilise sensory integration to help your body understand the connection between senses and your emotions. We explore strategies to help develop a sensory plan to help your body feel safe and calm so you can focus on doing the things that are meaningful to you.
Psychotherapy
You may have heard of psychologist or counsellor providing talk-based therapy. Well, did you know that occupational therapists are also trained in this form of therapy? Mental health occupational therapists complete additional training in psychological interventions to assist their clients through talked-based therapy with an "occupation-focused" lens. This means that we can provide psychotherapy service additionally focussing on occupation and routines that are meaningful to the individual person.
